Oh Dong-gu (Ryu, Deok-hwan) is a chubby sixteen-year old high school student who believes himself to be a female. Dreaming of becoming a perfect woman some day, he spends his time practicing singing and dancing like Madonna. Living with his abusive and alcoholic father, Dong-gu tries to save up money for a sex change surgery by doing part-time jobs. He has no interest in becoming a Ssireum (Korean traditional wrestling) player even though everyone agrees that he has the perfect physique for the sports. However, he decides to join the school Ssireum club when he learns about a match with cash prize of five million won ($5,000.00). A directorial debut of acclaimed screenwriters, the film weaves a touching yet humorous story of a transgender boy with a gaze of compassion towards the social minorities. |
